ST. MARY’S TITHING FUNDS AT WORK
Ten percent of St. Mary’s Sunday and holy day collections is used to help people who are poor or suffering in some way. The following local organizations receive allocations this year in the amounts shown, and six missions also receive allocations. Some volunteer opportunities are described. Bethany House of Northern Virginia Cathy Caputo, 703-961-1556, $10,000
· Provides for immediate/long term needs of victims of domestic violence.
· Volunteer legal & medical services, work in the office, provide child care and transportation.
Bikes for the World Linda Hansen, 703-425-6163, $500
· Collects bikes and ships them to poverty-stricken areas to provide affordable transportation.
· Volunteer for St. Mary’s bike collection; help to load bikes for shipping.
Capital Hospice Patient Care Fund Mary Pat Lane, 703-978-8821, $5,800
· Provides expert compassionate care to patients without insurance who face life-limiting illness.
· Volunteer for patient care, bereavement support, the thrift shop or administrative work.
Catholic Church of Preston County, WV Mary Ayre, 703-323-7597, $2,000
· Provides emergency financial assistance in an area where unemployment is as high at 50%.
· Donate new and used items. Deliver items donated by parish groups.
Catholics for Housing Inc. Bill Forster, 703-591-24377, $10,000
· Builds &/or preserves affordable housing; assists elderly and poor families to obtain housing.
· Advocate for construction and preservation of affordable housing; fundraising.
Community Living Alternatives (CLA) Debbie Bingham, 703-764-8243, $4,000
· Group home and day support services for adults with developmental disabilities.
· Donate household goods/office supplies, volunteer in office and one-time projects.
Dorothy Day Catholic Worker House Anthony DeCristofaro, 703-323-5013, $5,000· Provides social services to poor people in Washington.
· Deliver hot meals in Washington, babysit, help with repairs to the house.
FACETS Hot Meals Pat Parr, 703-631-9118, $2,500
· Hot meals program that provides evening meal 365 days a year for homeless individuals.
· Volunteer on the 5th Friday of the month or on the 3rd Wednesday of every other month.
FACETS Home Connections/Transitional Housing Liz DeLuca, 703-815-1752, $12,000
· Provides temporary housing/support services to help a homeless family become self-sufficient.
· Donate household items needed to furnish the family’s apartment.
Father McKenna Center Kay Sempel, 703-823-9492, $8,000
· Provides services to poor and marginalized to empower them to become independent.
· Pack emergency food bags, help with daily hot lunch, assist in job search, donate bus tokens.
FISH (For Immediate Sympathetic Help) Edie Reinsel, 703-323-8089, $7,000
· Assists Fairfax County residents with food, clothing, and finances for immediate needs.
· Volunteers receive and respond to requests for assistance.
Food For Others Faith McCormick, 703-425-2025, $5,000
· Obtains and distributes free food at 15 locations in Northern Virginia.
· Distribute food to two Burke sites, return food crates to Food For Others.
HOPE in Northern Virginia Carol Ferrier, 703-250-5659, $5,000
· Offers pregnancy assistance and counseling to any woman facing a problem pregnancy.
· Be a caseworker, provide direct service, sort donations, do yard work and maintenance.

· Provide financial & other support to homeless families in transition to subsidized housing.
· Work with representatives from other churches for more effective action & mutual support.

· Set up programs; advocate for an end to the use of the death penalty.

· Provides transitional housing (3-5 yrs) and life management skills to homeless families.
· Offer classes in life/work skills; provide household goods, school supplies, Easter baskets.

· Work on a small parish committee interacting with the families in a variety of ways.

· Provides 2 meals every day of the year to 1,500 of the District’s poor, as well as other services.
· Parishioners prepare Sat. & Sun. breakfast 8-10 times a year & volunteer in other programs.

· Builds leadership among low-income people for social and economic justice.
· Teach computer & health classes, tutor in an after-school program.
