The Historic committee worked with the US Postal Service to honor St. Mary’s 150th anniversary. The special cancellation (above) may be used to cancel specially designed envelopes that includes photo art work of the Historic Church.  This envelope design work is known to stamp collectors as the “cachet”, pronounced “cash-ay”.  The St. Mary of Sorrows cachet envelope will be available for sale to parishioners and the general public at the Labor Day picnic on September 1, 2008.   The USPS has agreed to set up a temporary postal station during the picnic festivities and will hand cancel the cachet envelopes bearing official postage or a special St. Mary of Sorrows Grotto stamp from www.photostamps.com.

Owning a St. Mary of Sorrows cachet envelope is a unique way to honor the 150th anniversary of St. Mary's. The cachet envelopes usually don’t have an address on them. This is how they’re normally saved as collectibles, known as "hand-backs", since they never are processed through the mails. However, everyone at the Labor Day picnic are welcome to post a letter then giving it to the postal employee for cancellation.

All proceeds from the cachet envelope sale will be used to support St. Mary of Sorrows programs.
